Miniatures in blue

2008–2018

The blue color and the light of the Mediterranean region captured in around 50 lyrical miniatures painted in the impressionist style, represent a new cycle of circular motion through time and space in which the past and the present of painter Milanka Đuranović Bajčetić meet and reach one another.

Spontaneously and directly, through modern artistic speech, the painter molds the stories told by the pictures from an old family album, with combined technique and oil on the coated passe-partout. The stories are about the Djuranovics, whose family tree is deeply rooted in the Valley of Bjelopavlici and has branched out through many family relations, reaching great urban areas in the period between the two world wars. This enabled the painter to form a collective unconscious memory about the time long gone, last forever to the everyday hectic lifestyles caused by modern scientific breakthroughs.

The male, represented by the urban architecture, and the female. represented by a woman dressed in a national costume are blended together in the paintings of landscapes and terracotta pots from the archeological sites. The specific artistic expression, circular brush-stroke, sophisticated spectrum of blue tones corresponding to the topic, emphasized chromatism and surface outlook of the compositions speak about the inborn inclination towards perfection, elegance and respectability innate to a female like the painter Djuranovic Bajcetic. Lyrical emotions that radiate from these small painted surfaces best speak about how much the painter is inebriated by and obsessed with the chest of our cultural heritage. For this reason, these 50 miniatures represent an ode to joy composed to the colors of the distant past times, to the patina condemned to a museum life.

These painted tiny surfaces tell a story about the patriarchic relation between the masculine and the feminine. They depict a relationship between a man, head of a household designated for higher societal goals and a woman, a mother and a housewife taking care of the family, who is subordinated to those goals. Through the family wardrobe, the painter portrays their social status.
